The cake is today’s posting is decorated with ribbon roses. I used to make these roses out of actual ribbons and glue them onto gift boxes. When I tried making these roses with fondant, it worked just as well and looked just as pretty! Try them out ….

Ribbon rose
These roses can be made with fondant but that takes fairly long to dry. I suggest using a 50/50 mixture which dries faster. To make this mixture, mix half gum paste and half fondant and knead well and it is ready to use.
Step 1:
Roll out fondant or 50/50 mixture.

Step 2:
Using a pizza cutter or a fondant cutter, cut ribbons which are 1 inches wide and 8 inches long. If you want to make smaller roses, cut strips which are thinner and shorter.

Step 3:
Fold over one corner of the strip.

Step 4:
Start rolling and continue all the way to the end…

…until it looks like this.

Step 5:
Cut the end of your rose with scissors.

Step 6:
Discard the end.

Step 7:
Smooth out the bottom of your rose using your fingers.

Step 8:
All done! Let these dry overnight.

Leaves
You can make leaves using leaf cutters. But, if you want to make leaves seen in my cake, follow these steps:
Step 1:
Roll out green fondant.

Step 2:
Cut out circles using a medium circle cutter from the Wilton circle cutter set.

Step 3:
Using the same medium circle cutter, cut out two halves of each circle…

…and you would end up with these leaf shapes. If you wish, you can stop here and actually use these as leaves for your cake OR you can continue with the rest of the steps…

Step 4:
Pinch the center of each leaf until the ends stick together.

Step 5:
Cut the pinched center with scissors. You now have two leaves.

Step 6 :
Smooth out the ends of of leaves with your fingers.

Step 7:
All done! Let them dry overnight.

Now that you know how to make ribbon roses and leaves, have fun with it! Try making different colors of roses or different sizes. Use them to decorate your cupcakes , cakes, petit fours and even cake balls/ cake pops…

Color the fondant to desired shade. Roll it to about 1/8" thick or thinner.

Using a pizza cutter and a ruler, cut a rectangular shape of approximately 3" by 7". You can cut them smaller or bigger depending on what size you will need. Once you cut the rectangle, fold it over lengthwise.

Then take one end and start rolling it to the other end. You can pinch the bottom part, like making some pleats, as you roll along. This helps open up the rose a bit.

Once it's rolled all the way to the end, cut the excess part off.

Next for the leaves, cut the fondant into squares. What I do is roll out the fondant and cut a big square, then I cut smaller squares. This helps the production faster.

Then take two opposite corners of the square and pinch them together in the middle.

Cut the pinched part in the middle.

You can make them roses and leaves ahead of time and leave them to dry or you can place them on the cake right away.

  • Fondant (any color of your choice)
  • Small rolling pin
  • Pizza cutter
  • Corn starch

Working on a non-stick surface is best like a silicone mat or even parchment paper. Working directly on your kitchen counter is fine too. Lightly dust your work space with corn starch to help keep the fondant from sticking. Roll out your fondant.

With the pizza cutter, cut out a strip. I cut this strip to 7″ x 1.5″ (I moved the strip down to the inch boxes to help you see that). You can cut your strip bigger or smaller depending on what size you want your flower. As you will see shortly, I made an assortment of sizes. So there are no rules on size here!

Fold your strip in half, and roll it just a bit.

Pick up your strip by the rolled end. Start wrapping the rest of the strip around the rolled end, and at the same time at intervals pinching the back to create pleats. Keep doing that until you have the whole strip wrapped around. Pinch off the excess at the bottom of the flower. Let dry (best for 24 hours).

I decided to make fondant ribbon roses today. I took some photos and will try to explain how I made these little roses. Here we go:

First, I rolled out some ivory fondant into a long strip. (16 inches long by 3 inches wide) The piece is pretty thin but not thin where its really floppy.

Next, I cut a straight line through the strip….this all depends on how big or thick you want the rose. This one is a good size.

I then dabbed on a little water along the straight edge of one of the pieces of the fondant.

I folded the strip in half and used the water to glue it together.

I then started from the left side of the fondant strip and rolled it toward the right side. I bunched up the fondant with my fingers every time I rolled the piece, to give it the fluffy look.

It started to resemble a rose and to finish it, I squeezed off the excess fondant on the bottom of the rose and let it dry flat.

For a little extra embellishment, I opened up the middle of the rose with my boning tool and stuffed a little bling in the center. I just used a rhinestone that I bought at Hobby Lobby….This piece makes the rose non-edible but very cute.

Below are some of the finished products that will dry for a couple of days before I place them on a cake.
